The coastal village of Perancak is named for its ancient temple, Purancak Temple, where the hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha first set foot on Bali in 1546.
Nirartha was responsible for facilitating a refashioning of Balinese Hinduism. He was an important promoter of the idea of moksha in Indonesia. He founded the Shaivite priesthood that is now ubiquitous in Bali, and is now regarded as the ancestor of all Shaivite pandits, there is a temple in his honour not far from here called Pura Rambut Siwi. ( see below )
Negara is famed for its bull races, held every year between July and October. The dates of the events vary from year to year. . Water buffalows are used to pull the tiny carts, gaily decorated for the ocassion, at high speed down the race track. Held to celebrate the end of the rice harvesting season, the races are judged both on speed and style, and create and amazing spectacle, enthusiastically watched by crowds of local people as the bulls thunder down the narrow mud track, bells ringing and silken banners flying
Pura Rambut Siwi |

Rambut Siwi Temple is one of the biggest Hindu Temples in Bali located in Negara regency, west part of Bali. It is a beautiful Hindu shrine set in the cliff bank with wide Indian Ocean just in front of the temple. This temple has been renovated and moved to the top of hill for better location of worshiping to the god. Pura (temple) Rambut Siwi is supported by the local residents, including the maintenance, ceremonies and other activities. Between the village of Air Satang and Yeh Embang a side-road leads to the beautiful coastal temple of Pura Luhur at Rambut Siwi, Inside are shrines to Dewi Saraswati, the Goddes of learning and Dewi Sri, the rice Goddes. Rambut is the Indonesian word for 'hair' and Siwi means 'worship', it is so named because Danghyang Nirartha, (who came to Bali from Java in approx.1546, during the decline the Majapahit Kingdom to fortify Balinese Hinduism against the spread of Islam), made a gift of his hair to the temple. It is kept in a sandlewood box inside the central 3-tiered meru.

It is also possible to organise a trip to include the Christian Villages of Blimbingsari and Palasari.
The communities, whilst Christian, are heavily influenced by Balinese culture. There are epic plays and dances for example which substitute the normal Hindu characters with those from the Bible. |
