Local Projects: The Enemy Plastic

The Enemy 'Plastic' Project

Made from the village has taken over co ordinating this project.

Bali Mountain Retreat, Sarinbuana Eco Lodge
and Bali Ecostay has joined forces to help clean up the plastic rubbish from Sarinbuana, Biyahan, Gempinis and Kanciano on the mountain in Tabanan.

Action is stronger than words.

staff go to the village for the cleanup.

BMR and Sarinbuana Ecolodge talked about their plan to clean up the village with some locals.
Certain systems and some capital was needed for the purchase of Bins and the ongoing collection of the plastic, bottles and cans and subsequent delivery to a recycling center in Tabanan.

This has now been improved with the distribution of bags for the rubbish which are then emptied into a truck hired to take the rubbish to the recycling centre in Tabanan once a month.

Child helps to clean the village

On the 23rd August 2009, the staff at BMR as well as local children and guests , all went to the village and cleaned the major walkways and roads of plastic. This action surprised many locals who were confused , why were western people cleaning their village. this was a great opportunity to explain to locals the danger of burning plastic and then place the bins at strategic places in the village.

Staff, owners and guests of BMR join in.

Made is holding meetings with the school and community in an effort to educate them to the dangers of burning the plastic or burying the plastic in a farming area.

Local children join in to clean their school grounds

We have all noticed the huge difference in the village, the streets are clean and hopefully the locals will feel a sense of pride in the villages concerned.

This project is as much about educating for the future as it is about the rubbish itself.

Why Is burning plastic so bad??

The burning of plastic in waste fires or on the street can produce a chemical group called Dioxins. This is dependent on the plastics themselves.

Dioxin is a known human carcinogen and the most potent synthetic carcinogen ever tested in laboratory animals.

Dioxin causes damage at infinitesimally low doses (in the low parts per trillion), including changes in hormone systems, alterations in fetal development, reduced reproductive capacity, and immunosuppression. and has been linked to endometriosis.

Dioxins are unintentionally, but unavoidably produced during the manufacture of materials containing chlorine, including PVC.

Our children and ourselves should never be exposed to this deadly chemical.

Stop producing Dioxin now!
Stop burning plastic!
